OriginIn the womb, epigenetic influences can change the developing brain in ways that increase the risk of eventual suicide. A stressful or deprived womb environment may interfere with the development of the fetus and its serotonin system; other studies have shown that the brains of people who exhibit suicidal behaviors have reduced serotonin activity. The Romans and Greeks had a relaxed attitude towards the concept of suicide. The relaxed attitude continued into the Christian church until the Council of Arles in 452 stated "if a slave commits suicide no reproach shall fall upon his master." The Catholicsn settled on the subject of suicide until the later 17th century.
